St. George (Hans von Marées)

Hans von Marées painted St. George as a knight riding a rearing up horse. The horse by itself is a Theme. The horse is a God and a way to the Gods. St. George fights the Dragon, a remind of pre-christian legends. Theseus, Beowulf. Here, all is grace. Red turns into rose, black and blue turn into azure. Gold is on white. Hans von Marées was an unexpected meeting. A lonely Sunday afternoon in Munich, at the Neue Pinakothek. A most striking meeting of all. This is no homage, this is a dedication. A declaration of love.
